Classics in Derbyshire Event
The Classics in Derbyshire event on Saturday 5 October, held at Strutt’s Community Centre in Belper, was organised to gauge whether there was sufficient interest locally to start a Derbyshire branch of the Classical Association.
89 people heard Dr Jane Masséglia unfold the fascinating detective story of ‘The Ketton Mosaic: How Greek stories came to Roman Rutland’. Visitors to the event had the chance to view a reduced scale image of the mosaic (actual size 10 x 5 m!) and finds from the Ketton villa site, as well as objects from Roman Derbyshire (in partnership with the Portable Antiquities Scheme), and to help create a post-it mosaic of ideas for future events.
Watch out for news of our new Derbyshire branch and let us know what you’d like to hear about at derbyshireclassicalassociation@gmail.com.
