St Andrews Latin Outreach Scheme (STALOS) Year 2
PROJECT LEAD: University of St. Andrews
DATE: Month year
PURPOSE: Film making
THEME: Homer’s Iliad
Thanks to the generous support of the CA, STALOS has been able to consolidate and grow its programme of activities this year.
Four University of St Andrews Postgraduate Researchers, after basic teacher training, taught 40 pupils at 2 state schools in the Tayside region Beginner Latin, over ten lunchtime sessions. The pupils completed at the end of the course a class test. Their results determined whether they were awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction at our “graduation ceremony”, held in the heart of St Andrews University.
At this year’s ceremony all STALOS tutors and faculty members who attended wore ceremonial robes in honour of the pupils’ achievement. Our Head of School Prof Roger Rees gave a welcoming address, the four tutors gave presentations about the wider subject area, and UG student reps spoke generally about the experience of attending university and of studying a classical subject in particular.
The schools taking part in the 2023 iteration of STALOS were Monifieth High and Grove Academy. Both are state schools in the Angus and Dundee council regions, respectively. We will continue at Grove for another year after a successful and oversubscribed first year.
