The Classical Association no longer provides funding to support traditional academic conferences hosted by universities.
However, the CA will consider applications from organizers of conferences which have a clear and significant connection to the teaching and learning of classical subjects in UK schools. For such conferences, organizers are invited to apply for a grant of up to £750.
For a face-to-face or hybrid conference, funds might be used to offer bursaries to current or trainee teachers who would otherwise be unable to attend (e.g. to help offset conference fees or other associated costs of attending). For an online or hybrid event, funds might be used to assist with reasonable administration costs (e.g. the employment of a postgraduate student as a temporary conference assistant and/or to help with IT). Please note that, in line with its environmental policy, the CA does not normally cover the cost of air travel.
In your application you should:
- Outline the ways in which your conference relates to the teaching and/or learning of classics in schools;
- State your plans for attracting teachers; and
- Explain how you intend to use CA funds to facilitate their attendance (e.g. if you are planning to award bursaries, please indicate how applications will be assessed and/or prioritised; if using funds to provide administrative support, outline how this will keep attendance costs down for this demographic).
- State how you intend to communicate and/or monitor the success of your event for reporting purposes to the CA (e.g. social media posts, blog entry, student questionnaires, photos) and how you intend to acknowledge the CA’s support.
If you are considering submitting an application for conference funding – and especially if you are planning a large conference (50+ in attendance), and would like to apply for more than £750 – please feel free to contact the CA for advice.
To apply for conference funding, please complete the Conference Grant Application Form and send as an email attachment to canews@classicalassociation.org, ensuring that you have followed the guidelines above in order to avoid any unnecessary delays to your application. Your application should include a copy of the Call for Papers and the conference programme, if available.
